The Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary also known as Sasan-Gir, in Gujarat, India. Established in 1965, with a total area of 1,412 km, the park is located 43 km north-east of Somnath, 65 km south-east of Junagadh and 60 km south-west of Amreli.It is the sole home of the Asiatic lions and is considered to be one of the most important protected areas in Asia due to its supported species.The ecosystem of Gir, with its diverse flora and fauna, is protected as a result of the efforts of the government forest department, wildlife activists and NGOs.

Booking NowAt Sasan, a thoughtfully developed and well-managed ecotourism is in function, with properly assigned trails and routes in Dedakadi and Sasan Ranges. Such routes have been made within the tourism zone of the Sanctuary with an average length of 35 km each. Each of the routes encompasses almost all habitat types of Gir region and facilitates wildlife sightings with a considerable ease. Artificial water-holes along the routes increase the probability of wildlife sightings. Private open Gypsies, registered by the Forest Department are available locally along with the well-trained local Guide.
Booking NowTo reduce the disturbance from tourism in the main sanctuary area, and to facilitate tourists to understand the importance of Gir and its wildlife, an interpretation zone has been created at Devalia. This comprises 412 ha of chain-link fenced area which is ‘Gir in a nutshell’, covering all habitat types and all major representatives of wildlife of Gir. The basic aim of creating this facility is to provide an opportunity to view lions and other animals in their natural habitat within a short period and reduce tourist pressure on the sanctuary. The area has a good quantity of prey base in the form of Spotted Deers, Blue Bulls, Wild Boars, Blackbucks, Sambars and Chinkaras. Spotting a Lion in its savanna habitat is a treat to the eyes for a wildlife.

The Junagadh Zoo is situated in the Junagadh district and is mainly known for its Gir lions. This zoo was built by Nawab in 1863 with the motive of saving these lions from extinction. Now, this zoo has turned into an established safari park. This park will somehow provide you a small glimpse of the Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary through its surroundings as well as through its collection of wildlife. Its main species of fauna comprises lions, leopards and tigers. It also houses a well maintained museum that has on display several paintings, archaeological findings and manuscripts along with a unique history section.
The Darbar Hall Museum is situated near the Diwan Chowk in the old Palace and preserves some of the rarest items of the erstwhile Nawabs. These items include weapons, armour, chandeliers, howdahs and palanquins. A collection of thrones, silver articles, paintings, costumes and tapestries is also at display in this museum. The carpet woven in Junagadh's jail is also present here. Pictures of the Nawabs in the form of a gallery of their royal portraits are also a part of this museum.
The Kamleshwar Dam is situated within the Sasan-Gir National Park, in its very centre. This dam is built over one of the seven rivers that drain in the area of Gir Sanctuary. These rivers include Shingoda, Raval, Godavari, Macchundri, Hiran, Datardi and Saraswati. Kamleshwar Dam is built over Hiran River. It is also referred to as the life line of Gir.
